Parking/Access Road Notes: I arrived a bit late, 9am. I was the only car in the winter lot. When I returned there was one other car. Saw no one the entire day. When I arrived, the gate to the ammo trailhead was open. When I left around 3:30, it had been closed.

Comments
Comments: There was faint evidence of tracks but what had been there was filled in. The only fresh tracks I saw were from a black bear. I wore microspikes from the trailhead until about 1.7 miles in (that's what the watch said) when the snow was deep enough for shoes. As I approached treeline the snow got deeper. Above the trees and on the rock pile of the Jewell trail, there was a lot of drifting - up to my knees a lot. It was very slow going. Tough to determine what was a cairn, a rock, or a small spruce. I only left the trail on purpose a couple times to skirt some hip-high drifts. That was all over once I hit the Gulfside trail. Most of the snow was strong enough to take my weight and was crunchy. When I started downhill towards the clay jct sign the snow was soft, but only sank about 4 inches. The rest of the hike was fast going. I wore my snowshoes as long as I could (even passed where I put them on before finally putting them back on my pack.
