Comments
Comments: The upper ledges on the Ammonoosuc Ravine trail had considerable ice but most often there were bare dry rock surfaces to take advantage of for secure footing. Microspikes or other light traction are recommended. No need for crampons today. I only used the traction on the upper ledges of the Ammonoosuc Ravine trail section however a case could be made to use microspikes on the Monroe Loop and the snow field above the lip of Ammonoosuc Ravine. No consistent snow cover yet there are places where one can posthole up to a foot or so.
I was surprised there weren't more hikers out on such an unseasonably mild day with gentle winds. Good to meet a Northeastern University student hiking to Mt Monroe and to talk with Deb and Charlie from the Pioneer Valley of Ma. It is worth the short walk on the side trail off the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail (not signed) to the viewpoint of the Gorge and its dual 600 foot cascades.
