Only a few cars to start but on return every spot was filled and the overflow from Highland Center filled both sides of the road to the parking and beyond. |

| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trails wet with stretches of flowing water and mud and a few big mud bowls. A few blowdowns going up Jackson, but no big deal. Biggest problem was the thin ice on the planks and roots between Jackson and the hut. After a few skates I slowed down on the planks and avoided the roots. |

| Dog-Related Notes: |
The mighty tough little dog earned his stripes. Easy slopes and no heat or water concerns, but he was very wet and muddy on the underside, and it froze that way up on the ridge in the cold and gusty wind. But he seemed to be having a good time especially on the ridge and Eisenhower. He let me give him a couple boosts on the approach to Jackson where there are some sizable boulder jumps for a little dog. Met 3 other dogs down low on Crawford. |

I put this hike off too many times when the forecast was wrong, so we went despite today's higher summits forecast. Up to Jackson the trail is shielded but on the cone it was pretty bad and that plus peaks in the clouds led me to think Eisenhower would be dropped. Trail over to the hut not particularly nice, muddy & icy. Needed nannospikes for the planks. From the hut to Pierce the trail was better with some views and sun. The wind wasn't so bad at Pierce and Ike was out of the clouds so we went. Strong winds hit us in the usual spot part way to Ike but the cone itself wasn't bad, only on top was it annoying. On the return winds were dropping and it was a pleasant hike out. After passing some hikers near the beginning I saw one guy on Jackson and 1 guy going over to Pierce. On the ridge I met maybe 10 people on the return leg. I didn't meet anyone on Crawford until a ways down and then after the cutoff I met a fair number of mostly hut hikers. For Columbus Day it was a relatively uncrowded set of trails. Too bad the foliage that we could see was well past peak. So the little mutt and I got some adventure on the hikes up, and a pleasant hike down. Pretty good hike for two trail buddies. |
