Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Nothing particularly notable. Bridges or simple rock hops.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Another group informed us that on their ascent, about 200 yards short of the "new" Gorge Brook Trail branch with Snapper Trail on the ascent, they disturbed a nest of bees/wasps/hornets somewhere on or just off the trail, and were heavily stung and chased for quite some time. We did not encounter anything, but it might be worth looking out for.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Surprisingly few dogs. Wish I could go up as fast as they do!
Bugs
Bugs: Not too bad. I think one stubborn, lonely mosquito followed me half way up the mountain. Lots of nasty bugs on Carriage Road in some sections, though. There was one small stretch of Carriage road with a foul, nasty smell where the worst of the bugs were, but we didn't see anything to indicate what might be causing it. Saw one giant monstrous fly near the summit sign, but at least it wasn't an aggressive swarm like last time on Eisenhower!

Comments
Comments: We did the "classic" loop from Ravine Lodge: up Gorge Brook Trail, down Carriage Road and Snapper Trail. Going up was not too bad and is the kind of trail I enjoy the best (alternating moderately quick elevation gain with relatively flat/gentle sections, and some good ledge views), but going down was tough on me because there is basically NO shade on the top half of the descent route (Carriage Road and especially Snapper Trail) in the afternoon, and it was 80+ degrees by then with the sun out in full force.

I thought the footing was much better on Gorge Brook Trail than the other two. Snapper and Carriage Road had lots of places with loose pebbles, and a few spots with wet rocks (despite getting way more sun); Gorge Brook Trail had many nice rock staircases. LOTS of (presumably Dartmouth) students/younger folks were hiking. The lodge apparently plays some VERY loud music - you can hear it blaring for miles, right up the mountain.

Mrs. Ridge Warrior did much better above treeline and with exposed views this time -- she had hiking poles this time, plus the exposed sections are very wide, so they make fear of heights less of an issue. Hopefully with the poles making her feel less wobbly up high, I can help her build some more confidence on the mountains with smaller exposed sections.
