I set up camp in the Great Gulf on Friday, hiking the Great Gulf > Wamsutta lollipop loop on Saturday. The Great Gulf Trail was spectacular. Views, waterfalls, rugged trail, Spaulding Lake... just lovely. Above Spaulding Lake, the trail and water course were one in the same, and at some point, it became safer to just surrender and walk in the water, than to continually try to avoid the water. The climb was steep, but not too tricky. Eventually, the water course ends, and a loose rock slide takes over. I had to pay attention as the slide sometimes covered the trail, but it wasn't too hard to see where others had traveled. Standing at the lip on top and looking down, made me feel like a million bucks.
The summit was busy... but a hot cup of coffee made that seem okay.
I made my way downhill to Wamsutta via Nelson Crag & Alpine Garden trails. Wamsutta descended easily for a while... until it didn't. Check out the contour lines, and you'll see where it gets steep. I took it careful, one rock at a time, sitting on my butt a lot and slowly dropping down to the next rock. There were two places that were tricky... cliff-like... and I used a rope I was carrying to give me something to hold onto while I lowered myself to a solid toehold. Never scary.... but "mindful." :-)
Terrific day.
