Beautiful sunny day to be out.
First time up Hammond. Nice footbed, not too steep. I wanted to visit Bald Mountain for the view. The best approach is to locate 2 boulders (about 4 feet around) in the center of Hammond and bushwack directly east (right). Through the first layer of firs, a herdpath with several modest cairns lead to the east facing ledge with a very nice view of Chocorua, the sisters and Carter ledge. I was surprised to clearly see the gravel slide that one encounters on the Carter Ledge trail.
Stopped at the Jim Liberty shelter (which I remember from my first boy scout climb back in the 60's). I was greeted by a large contingent of yahoo's on the summit, screaming in unison. Fortunately they had vacated the summit before I arrived. Less than 20 people on top, light breeze, very pleasant. |
