I did this hike from the north end of the Unknown Pond Trail. It involves a 4.5 mile drive on Millbrook Road, a gravel road which is located in the town of Stark, to get to the trailhead. I was the only car there and I saw no one all day. The northern part of Unknown Pond Trail has mostly gradual inclines and excellent footing all the way to the pond. Kilkenny Ridge Trail by the pond is OK, but the farther you get from the pond the worse the footing gets. It is not difficult, but you need to spend a lot of energy looking where to place your feet, which slowed me down quite a bit. The spur trail up to The Horn is as described in the WMG. It is mostly easy, but near the top there is some serious ledge scrambling. The views are worth it. The climb to The Bulge is easy. The summit is flat and a bit long. There is a small clearing with a big square notch axed into a tree (on the right heading towards Cabot) which I am pretty sure marks the true summit. The trail begins a descent to the col between The Bulge and Cabot shortly after this location. Peaks 79 and 80 for me. |
