Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Isolation, NH
Trails
Trails: Rocky Branch Trail, Isolation Trail, Davis Path, Isolation Spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, July 18, 2016
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: 6 or 8 cars in the Rt. 16 parking lot when we got there on Sunday about 1 pm. One car other than us when we returned on Monday at 3:30. The other car left while we were un-staging. We ran into one other hiker as we approached the parking lot on the way down, who did a brief up and down. I have a feeling that these might have been the only other hikers who used the lot on Monday, as we saw no one else who came from that direction. The lot is quite big and I have a feeling that it is underused and rarely reaches capacity, considering the number of people who might be attempting Isolation from that trailhead on a given day.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Crossings were rockhops, major crossings (of Rocky Branch) required care, but were not too difficult.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Rocky Branch Trail appeared to have received recent maintenance in the lower parts, close to Rt 16. Davis Path north of Isolation appears to be in sore need of new bog bridges.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw some, looks like a suitable route for dogs as long as they don't mind rock hopping or wading a wet and muddy trail.
Bugs
Bugs: A few ear-buzzing deer flies now and then, but they were not a problem. The parking lot had quite a few deer flies when we got back and a few got a free ride to Massachusetts. Well, actually they did not make it there alive.

Comments
Comments: Nice overnight hike to Isolation. The rain Saturday night caused large parts of the Rocky Branch Trail and some parts of Davis Path to become swamps requiring a mile or so of rock hopping. I don't think it is always like this, but there was plenty of mud and running and standing water for long stretches. Thanks to Lone Wolf for a great trip.
