Trails: Glencliff Trail, Carriage Road, Hurricane Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, July 1, 2016
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Arriving shortly after 7 am, I was surprised to find 4 cars already in the small Glencliff lot. I gathered they were related to AT through-hikers.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All of note are bridged.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Glencliff fine, keeping in mind that it is AT, and so eroded and popular. Ditto Carriage Road as far as Snapper Trail back to Ravine Lodge. South of that, much rougher and less traveled. Even more so for the west segment of the Hurricane Trail, which has rough stretches on either side of the Hurricane summit plateau. The plateau and trail to its east have received recent attention.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Few and far between, until the rugged and wet Hurricane Trail after noon, where blackflies (I assume) that didn't bite, but swarmed occasionally, annoyed.

Comments
Comments: Hiking this loop clockwise allowed me to avoid descending the somewhat steep and rocky upper sections of the Glencliff Trail, which I appreciated. The west segment of the Hurricane Trail is a push. The 900 extra vertical feet make the loop more effortful than a casual glance at the map might suggest, but the high point is in the middle and there are rough, steep stretches on either side
