Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lot was over half full when I arrived; on leaving there were lots of cars parked out on the road. Unlike Labor Day weekend very little extra traffic on the roads.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: rock hops
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Some mud on ammo in lower sections. Jewell has several shortcuts above treeline, probably from us winter hikers, that are indistinguishable from the real trail if one doesn't carefully monitor the cairns.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fun trails for the mighty tough little dog and temps and wind kept this black dog from overheating in mostly sunny skies despite a good pace. His pads are tough, which is good since upper rock often rough crystalline and good sized boulders. Plenty of water on Ammo and Camel. Jewell is fairly dry until low but it's worst trait is no sippin & dippin until very low. Saw a couple of other dogs on the trail including a nice lab on upper Ammo that seemed to be by itself.
Bugs
Bugs: Surprisingly yes, on Clay, when the wind stopped. I didn't think they were biting but I have a classic black fly bite on a leg.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: There was a blue sweater on upper Jewell which I and others left in place as it looked like it was spread out to dry.

Comments
Comments: What a fabulous day to be on Washington despite the heavy traffic on Ammo, Crawford near the hut and on top. The views were awesome and the temps/humidity great with modest wind. We had long snack breaks on both peaks. I thought we could hike past the traffic on the way up but as soon as we passed one group another appeared; it never ended until we turned off onto Camel. We had Camel & Lawn Cutoff all to ourselves and Davis mostly so in both directions so we wandered all over. At Tuckerman Jct we ran into hikers but much less than Ammo, same for Gulfside. We had Clay's main peak all to ourselves and with some imagination we could see the flags go up on Jefferson and Monroe. I wish we could do it all over again right now, although I would leave a little earlier.
