Trails: Mt. Kinsman Trail, Bald Peak Spur, Kinsman Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, May 23, 2016
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Great lot, but easy to miss if you're heading north. Keep an eye out for the tennis camp, it's very close.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Many many small ones. The rest are either bridged or easy.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: WOW!!!!! Not one blow down the whole trail (evidence of one recently dispatched). New signs, nicely painted blazes. In the beginning of this hike, there were many side trails and herd paths. Trail maintenance has done a great job with their arrow signs of keeping you on the straight and not so (at this point) narrow. Thanks!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw two. This is probably a good hike for dogs, but there are a few ledges.
Bugs
Bugs: Very strange. None, except for about 20 minutes late in the day near the small cascade. But did not even need bug juice for these (black flies).
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Lost a sock, we found it on the way down.

Comments
Comments: A note to Nicole, who posted about Eisenhower and Tom/neighbors. Slow? You haven't seen slow till you've seen us. We took all day to do this due to the steep upper sections, so don't feel bad.

A note to peak baggers with knee issues. This is a nice way for you to get N/S Kinsman. Although the higher elevation of this trail was steep, I thought it was easier than the other side. The first couple miles were a gentle, moderate ascent with very few rocks (I believe it may have been an old road). Many flowers today - Trillium in both colors (including tiniest one ever), violets, some white star shaped flower I don't know the name of. A little hobblebrush, too! Right before the spur to Bald Peak there is a lovely cascade. Bald peak was beautiful and could be a destination in its own right for a shorter hike. After this, things pick up. Alternates between steep, not so steep, and flat sections, but no bad rocks and roots till you get near the junction with Kinsman Ridge Trail. We only went as far as North Kinsman (where I took a nap) because I was just too damn tired and knew I had to drive back home once we were done. Great views.
