Comments
Comments: Started out in the rain but it changed to snow after only a mile in. Conditions gradually became colder and snowier with accumulating snow above treeline. Despite the snow, there was really no need for microspikes and we never put them on. Only a few patches of avoidable ice left and too many exposed rocks for traction to be helpful. Conditions were severe the last half mile up to the summit cone with hurricane force winds, blowing snow, and sub-zero wind chills. We made it to the summit of Lafayette but opted to skip the ridge walk and retreated back down for an out and back rather than the traditional loop over Lincoln.

We passed one group while on the way up to the summit from the hut that was coming down and had ascended Falling Waters Trail and completed the loop from the other side. Very few summiters today with almost all of the groups we passed retreating down from an overnight stay at Greenleaf. A fun hike in winter's last gasp on the high peaks!
