Decided to see how far I could get bare booting it and with trekking poles. Snow coming down during the hike and accumulated 2-3" on top of consolidated snow while I was there. Took Tuckerman Ravine Trail to Harvard Cabin (was vacant) and then entered Lion Head Trail Winter Route (was still open this date). When it got steep on Lion Head Trail slipping was too great and then took Tuckerman Ravine Trail into Tuckerman Ravine. I broke trail most of the way to Hermit Lake. Snow was over 1 ft deep average at the caretakers/ranger cabin near Hermit Lake, with blowing snow conditions. Continued on Tuckerman Ravine Trail for about another 200 ft elevation gain until it became too steep and slipping too great and then turned back to parking lot. Crampons and ice axe would have been needed to gain more elevation.
Slipped and fell a few times on trail ice hidden under snow cover. |
