Comments
Comments: Bluebird day with temps in mid 20s to high 30s. Fresh snowfall last ended last evening. Ground frozen at 5am at PNVC, but wet and muddy at lower elevations on return late afternoon. Kahtoola Microspikes & trekking poles on Tuck to junction Lion Head Trail (summer route). (Lion Head Winter Route closed for a week or more.) Thin coat snow on Tuck near PNVC. Snow increased with elevation. About 3-4" new snow at Junction Lion Head Trail. Put on Crampons & switched to Ice Axe at start of Lion Head Trail and had to break trail. Could not have climbed with Microspikes. Most difficult part of route to summit was Lion Head Trail up to the Lion Head knob. Near Lionhead knob trail is icy/bare rock and highest wind gust of about 25-30 mph. After Lion Head knob, icy trail until start of the snow field. Had trouble following the trail in snow field (buried cairns ?) and could not find junction of Tuck so bushwacked through snow up summit cone until linked up with Tuck. Several inches snow on summit and high winds at summit sign. NO SHELTER OPEN on summit. Alcove in summit visitor center is blocked off. No one was visible on the summit.
