Comments
Comments: Good dry start from Lincoln Woods, we knew from the forecast we would get wet and both of us were prepared. We are both getting ready for an Alps excursion, so this was my hair brained idea of a "training day". a warning to the kids at home don't do it.

Took highway out of lincoln woods and got off at the Blackpond exit all those trails in great shape. Did black pond the way I like starting high and dropping into fisherman's for the finish. We headed up lincoln brook trail and met a couple coming out. They were going to ford both the lincoln brook crossing so we urged them to get out before the rains kicked in. Last brook crossing was the only tricky one of the 3, we still hopped that and hung a right for brutus. I cut it in to close on the brutus bushwhack but we adjusted and came into the main herd path at the rock. Bushwhack off the top of Owl's head is quite nice. Terrain is relatively level and we held a north bearing with the though being in my mind that we could pick up the trail before it turned left. There were a lot of old log roads heading north so we followed those and dropped gradually to the left as the terrain and blow downs pushed us that way. We had no problem picking up the trail and doing the crossings to get to 13 falls campground. We then started the climb up to Galehead hut, it is in good shape except towards the top there is a couple of significant blow downs and ice. When we got to the junction I violated a basic gridiot rule and said if I need galehead for grid 3 I'll come back for it. We scampered off to Galehead hut and were amazed to find it open. We were able to switch into dry clothes in relative luxury and went back out into the blowing snow to head up South Twin. There is significant ice and now about 1" of snow. Trail over to N. Twin was uneventful. Coming off N twin was difficult for the first 300 yards or so. We managed to do a complete circle than shot a north azimuth and stayed along the rim of the ridge. Eventually it cleared out and there was a faint heard path. We came out at (what we believed to be) Peak Above but could not find the cannister. Then we headed down. There we made a critical mistake. We should have shot a north azimuth but just headed down. Long short we ended up at a brook which flowed into a major river which was headed the wrong way. We followed the brook for some distance and finally it came to a bridge. I said to Wayne this does not look right for Haystack road and sure enough we were on Gale Head road. We cut over through the winter trail to Beaver Brook and started walking and hitching. Mercifully a nice lady from the Randolph Mountain Club picked up our worn out sorry behinds and gave us a ride back to Seven Dwarves. So lots of good, marked by one wrong move. Keep your head in the game.
