Comments
Comments: Trail from parking lot to the junction where Avalon trail goes the left and A-Z trail to right was mostly bare ground, muddy, wet rocks. Stretches of soft ice began just before this but were avoidable. At around 2900 feet, opted to put on my beat up microspikes (just bought them this year). Steady ice, mostly soft til summit of Tom with some bare spots mixed in. Willey Range trail to Field was steady soft ice. Mixed ice, slush and bare ground to Willey. Trail from Field to Avalon, back to A-Z was very steep and of course, ice which was soft enough to stay with the light traction. Crampons went for a ride. Others may feel more comfortable with heavier traction for this stretch.
Nice to see Random Group on summit of Willey today.
