Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, April 30, 2016
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The parking lot was overflowing by the time we got back to the car around 3pm. But that's to be expected on a sunny, warm, spring weekend.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Blue, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Mud - Significant, Snow - Spring Snow, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: We counted seven notable stream crossing, most of which were on the Hancock Notch Trail and the Cedar Brook Trail. It was easy to skip from rock to rock and keep our feet dry (although the mud and slushy ice are another story).
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There are two trees across the trails. One tree is located near the start of the Hancock Notch Trail and is easy to step over. Another tree was higher up, I believe between the two summits. That tree couldn't be navigated over or under, although there's a cow path developing off to the side of it.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: No ticks

Comments
Comments: The snow we got on Tuesday (April 26th) was still on the trail and in the woods, although by the afternoon, the lower elevation snow had mostly melted. However, there were still a few inches of it left up near the summits (we saw a snowshoe hare jumping through it). The 0.5 miles up to South Hancock are slow going because of how steep it is, coupled by the fact there's still a notable amount of ice and snow. For this section of the trail, expect winter trail conditions. Microspikes are recommended, although we saw many people hiking it without them. Other than that, there were only sporadic spots of ice throughout the hike. Beautiful day, and a great hike. The approach is really wonderful.
