Rock hopping will get you easily across. The ice flows further up had a lot of running water on them. |

A blue bird day, although a bit chilly and breezy. The trail up to bald peak was not a problem, excellent footing and maybe one patch of ice that you can very easily walk around. shortly after the trail junction headed up to N. Kinsman, i was harassed by a gaggle of juncos! 50-100 of these little guys and gals were flying all around me and making one heck of a racket (actually it was pretty awesome). ice flows became prominent ~2.5mi from parking lot and by ~3.5mi the microspikes could not handle going up anymore. Going down, the microspikes failed again and again, resulting in a nasty tumble and some nice ice rash. I passed two gents on the way down who had hillsound pros, maybe they had better luck. I do know that something much more significant than micros is needed to summit North Kinsman, even with the ice being soft as it was. Consider summiting North Kinsman from this side very dangerous without substantial traction devices. |
