Good conditions first ~1.5 miles in. After that, the trail became completely covered in ice for the North facing ascent. Nearly impassable without any traction, and dangerous with only microspikes and poles on the steep portions of the trail. Like others, we spent most of the ascent in the trees on the sides of the trail, and we did witness a nasty fall from another hiker. The hike between East Osceola and Osceola was more manageable, but still difficult with ice cover. Until the ice melts more, I'd suggest looking for a trail with more of a south face. The temperatures are lovely, and so are parts of the trail that get more sun. |
