Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, April 16, 2016
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Sawyer River Road still gated as expected but other than a small patch of snow/ice right at bottom it is totally dry.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Ice - Black, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Ice - Breakable Crust, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow - Wet/Sticky
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Low water levels. Crossing on current trail had nicely laid out branches forming small bridges. Crossing on old route had nicely placed rocks for rock hopping. No issues either way.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few blowdowns; none causing any rerouting other than one on the old trail. A water bar about 3/4's of a mile before the Carrigain Notch jct. needs work. I played with it last summer but it needs more work once things thaw out as flow goes down trail unnecessarily.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Shiya enjoying the day in the tower. Most dogs will have issues with the stairs and openness on this tower. Trail fine for dogs today; soft ice.

Comments
Comments: I can't imagine April can deal one any better conditions for Carrigain than we had today. Perfect weather. I enjoyed the trails more than any summer hikes I've done here. The road and first 2 1/2 miles of trail were barebootable except the section between the first two relocations where microspikes worked fine on the soft ice. The ice floe I've read about near the brook recently was easily done on soft ice. Upper 2 1/2 miles I wore microspikes (except near Signal Ridge) and then Hillsound trail pros on the way down for added confidence and speed. Coming down physically felt like going down a ski slope today as upper half was a smooth, hard packed trail of either soft ice or snow rather than all the small rocks you deal with in summer. I would imagine great conditions tomorrow as well. If temps fall below freezing this week conditions will be tough again. Out of 14 hikers seen today 11 in microspikes and 3 barebooters. Barebooters having a tough go on the way up; must have been trickier going down. Nice chatting with Corey and friends on top and running into Amanda again.
