Trail starts off dry, then becomes a bit icy about 3/4 miles in. We chose to put spikes on about a mile in and kept them on the entire rest of the way until we reached the dry section again on the return. Most of the trail is packed, frozen, ice/granular snow, which is perfect for microspikes. There is one short section of ice flow probably about 1/4 mile from the summit of Starr King, and one short ice shoot as you climb to the summit of Starr King. Nothing signicant, you just have to be careful. Most of the ridge trail is more powdery snow, probably a few inches deep. It was a bluebird day out and got some great views of the Presis! Make sure you go past the summit of Waumbek a hundred yards or so for a good lookout spot. Great spring day out in the Whites! |
