Trail can be barebooted to around the Wilderness Boundary, then it's easier with light traction which is all that was needed today. I whacked through Engine Hill, glades are mostly snow free so if you're not comfortable off trail it might be easier to just stay on the Rocky Branch Trail. The ground was frozen so I didn't sink in at all through the open muddy/swampy areas, once it warms up soon this would be an issue. Saw a lot of moose activity but no moose. The rest of the trails are easy to follow and packed down nicely. On the way out I stuck to the trails and I checked out the former site of the Rocky Branch Shelter #2, all that is left is junk in the woods under a tarp and a big charred out rectangle where the wooden bottom of the lean-to was burned. Looks like a really eyesore there right now :( ... Views from Isolation's summit were not an eyesore however :) |
