Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The three major Cascade brooks crossings were all difficult, though not impossible. The water was pretty high and some rocks were icy. We had to get creative with some of our routes.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Kinsman Pond trail has 2 or 3 pretty major blowdowns, one of which was necessary to crawl under.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn't see any...though I would imagine the ice on all three trails would be deterrents.
Bugs
Bugs: none.

Comments
Comments: Me, and three others started off at 10:30 with the intention of doing both Kinsmans. We all had microspikes and poles and thought that would be OK. We purposefully avoided Fishin Jimmy knowing the trail would be far too icy. What we didn't expect was for all three trails to be as icy as they were. Basin-Cascade trail was mud then some pretty significant ice around the Kinsman Falls. Cascade brook, was OK...but not great. Kinsman Pond trail was beautiful with a fresh coating of a few inches of powder, but there were some significant ice flows in the steep sections, as well as some nasty sections along the pond. If you come up this way you may want to test the integrity of the pond ice right along the shore and just skip these nasty ice flows. We had lunch at the shelter but turned around shortly after the junction to north kinsman as the flows were too long and steep, and the consistent ice on the trails really pressed us for time. Highly recommend AT LEAST microspikes/Hillsounds (having Crampons handy would be ideal), and allot some extra time for slower moving.
