Dog-Related Notes: Jake, who is the size of a tall cat and a good hiker, was fine all day. As a precaution, we put him on a lead for some of the icy places, but he did better than his humans.

Comments
Comments: A few flakes of snow falling as we drove into Franconia Notch. Dusting of snow in the parking lot; about an inch between the peaks. We had the joy of walking on fresh unbroken snow one more time this season! It was really beautiful. Starting out, the the mud was happily frozen; on the return it had thawed and there was some water running on the trail. Serious ice started about .3 mi below the tentsite; we put on spikes there and wore them until we were past that point on the descent. The surface of the ice was mostly rough under the new snow, but the snow concealed the really slippery places, making for some exciting steps and some slow going. There is significant ice for a long way. I considered putting crampons on a couple of times, but decided not to. Personally, I would not attempt this hike without at least some sharp spikes; others might prefer full crampons. Conditions change rapidly this time of year. Another great day in the mountains!
