We were able to bareboot to near to the first water crossing on the Hancock Notch Trail. From there we used light traction, as the trail was ice all the way to the Hancock Loop Trail and up to North Hancock. The ascent up North Hancock was a mix; mostly it was ice, but there was a bare, rocky and very wet section closer to the top. The ridge walk was a real treat with little ice and some fresh snow - the most new snow we'd seen in a while! The descent off of South Hancock was extremely icy, most of us changed into Hillsound Pro Trail crampons or regular crampons for a little extra traction. There were several exposed ice bulges, but most of the trail was hard ice with a thin layer of snow over the top. There were definitely some spots where if you weren't wearing traction, you might end up in traction (not my quote, I believe it was Jeb's or GaryT.'s).
Beautiful sunny and blue sky day, perfect for a fun hike with Schorman, LadyDi, Jeb and GaryT. |
