Comments: Getting up Whiteface wasn't too bad. The ledges were bare, thank goodness. There are still plenty of icy stretches and we saw someone who had turned back, but they only had YakTraks. The Rollins Trail was all covered, some of it was easy walking with our Hillsounds and some of the steeps & ledges were just ice floes. Very hard maneuvering through these areas. Had to try to bushwhack or go down backward holding onto the shrubbery. Tried to summit Passaconaway, but then I slid about 10 feet down an ice sheet. I was OK and we pressed on, but encountered more ice and just gave up. On the way down we somehow got on a different trail (not sure how) and ended up having to take the Wonalancet Range Trail up over Mt Hibbard to the short cut back to Ferncroft. There was more ice to deal with on some ledges on the short cut. Long day & came out with headlamps. The ice really slowed us down today and the overall conditions were not fun. We are sticking with smaller hikes until all this ice melts for good.
