Bare ground from start of Rocky Branch Trail to up past the split with the x-c ski trail. Put on traction partway between there and where the trail levels out headed toward the wilderness boundary. Light traction is all that we used today. Snow depth and coverage increased from near the wilderness boundary through the Engine Hill Bushwhack, although parts of the bushwhack are now bare, especially near the boggy areas near the beginning. What snow remains is very soft, enough to posthole in some places, but gets more consolidated closer to the Isolation Trail. From the Isolation Trail to the summit, there was a couple of inches of new snow, not enough for snowshoes, but if it gets soft enough to posthole, some hikers may want snowshoes. A few extra paths in the tent area near the Davis Path; the majority of the traffic has broken the trail straight to the Davis Path and skips the intersection with the signs.
Warm and mild day with much less wind than expected on the summit. Many thanks to HikingGuy for a great hike out to Isolation! |
