Comments
Comments: Days like this are rare - views were just WOW. Actually hiked up through the undercast heading up Pierce today but nothing but pure sunshine up top all day. Trail conditions were mixed but ice was still the word of the day until Pierce. Crawford connector was ice with a few patches of mud. Crawford path was an icy highway heading up but really only 2 icy steep pitches below Mizpah cutoff where you had to slow the pace. Above Mizpah cutoff the ice transitioned to packed snow with a few icy stretches. A few ice bulges in this stretch but easily crossed with traction. Beyond Pierce Crawford was a mix of packed snow, spring snow, slush and bare rock - packed and spring snow in the trees with spring snow, slush, and bare rock in the sun. Water proof boots were helpful. Kept traction on just to avoid the on again and off again but you could do this stretch without. A few puddles of water you need to navigate. Eisenhower loop was spring snow going through the trees down low but then bare rock or slush. There was a also a good stretch with running water - traction not needed for the loop. Won't likely be any snow left on the loop soon. Summit area was actually quite muddy. Took my time heading up taking lots of pictures since its been a few years I've been on the stretch between Pierce and Eisenhower. Heading down things softened up so more slush and water, the ice of Crawford below Pierce softened and there were areas that had melted out to mud. All in all hike was a 10 out of 10
