Comments: After telling people at the info desk at Pinkham all day Sat that the Mt. Washington trails were icy, I decided to try it myself on Sunday. I discovered there was no ice. Conditions couldn't have been better. Starting out from the lodge the trail was patches of ice and large bare areas I finally decided to take off my Hillsound spikes (brand new, maiden voyage) and was able to easily make it to the Lion Head Trail junction w/o spikes. Then I put them on. There were the usual tricky steep spots just before treeline but on one, it looked like somebody had kindly chopped steps to make it easier. All the way to summit the snow was not deep, was sticky enough for traction but not so sticky it balled up at all. On the ascent, at the point where the steep snowfield meets the boulder section I saw a group of Middle Eastern climbers wearing crampons being led by a local guide descending and showing fear and apprehension as they started the downclimb, but in reality it was fairly grippy, I have seen it much worse. Many climbers were wearing Kahtoola spikes which evidently was good enough. On my descent I kept the spikes on till the muddy patches started nearing Pinkham because I was tired and there were occasional patches of ice.
