It's a winter wonderland again! The peaks received more snow overnight than we were expecting in the morning. There was a nice thick fresh layer of snow about 3 or 4 inches on top of the ice on the trail underneath. Microspikes were balling up from the snow so we barebooted the whole way. The rocks were tricky with the fresh snow as it was hard to tell where the rocks were and the holes in between. Snowshoes would not have worked well on the rocks up above although it may have been nice in the knee high drifts in some places, especially on the Gulfside trail. It was very different from hiking up there on Monday when it was all thick ice. My friend Rachel went with me for my Winter NH 48 finish and we were the only ones out there! We started hiking in a snowstorm and the clouds lifted (as predicted) as we got to Gulfside trail and had to make a decision. It was a beautiful sunny day after that, with the summit of Jefferson in and out of clouds at times. The wind speed picked up on our return across the ridge but it was manageable. |
