Comments
Comments: Closed out the winter on Mt. Washington. In the trees the trail is a mix of ice and bare ground. The bare ground is never a long enough spurt to justify taking microspikes off. It was just easier to power through it.

Once we left the trees the trail was now a mix of ice, bare ground, and rocks. Hopping from rock to rock with spikes was challenging until we got used to it. I took them off a couple of times, but it just ended up slowing us down more so I pushed through it.

Once on the ridge we followed the Gulfside Trail until the section that is on the edge of the Great Gulf. At that point we just made our way to the Cog Railway and followed that around to the summit.

The summit had 40 mph winds but was otherwise quiet and clear. Winter hiking has its advantages.

For the way down we stayed on the trail until the Cog Railway. We then followed that down to the Weststide Trail, which brought us back to the Gulfside and eventually Jewell.

Once we were in the trees a good distance it started freezing rain. It was not terrible and we were warm enough that we did not put our rain jackets on.

It was good to close out on this mountain for this winter hiking season. It was an interesting set of conditions and a bit strange to hike in the winter without a jacket on.
