had planned to do the osceolas, but after the ice on the kinsmans on friday, tried to pick a trail (south facing) that would hopefully have less ice. Dicey's Mill pretty much fit the bill. wore spikes for the first .5mi or so thru the shaded woods of blueberry ledge cut-off before it crosses the river (bridge), the one short section real close to the river with hardly any room for your feet was real icy and with nothing to hold on to, was scary for me. the first 1.5 of Dicey's Mill was pretty much barebootable, it got really soft and squishy with the sun warming up the mud in the afternoon. after that i put the spikes on because i was wasting too much time trying to walk around the icy patches. spikes definitely needed for the last half up to the summit. packed snow and ice. took the west side of the loop as it was recommended that it had less ice and less steep. there was still ice, but easy enough going up and coming down, i hugged trees or went around the patches in the woods. snowshoes not needed at all. it was soo warm and sunny i zipped off my pant legs in the morning and hiked in t-shirt and shorts...in March! hope to get out at least once more before "winter" officially ends. |
