Comments
Comments: Ammo was a mess. Crampons and ice axe is the only safe way to go. I did it in sharp spikes but wouldn't do it again. It was either navigate the ice or post hole to your waist trying to work around it. I talked with someone that also did it in spikes but he said he took a 40' slide at one point. Monroe was easy with some ice, solid snow and bare rock. Upper Gulfside has some large sections of boilerplate leaving the summit. We walked the cog down to the Westside crossing and then cut over to Gulfside and then Jewel and this skipped some of the worst of it. Upper Jewel is bare rock, then some postholed monorail, then some mud and ice. But way better than Ammo. Just be prepared to kill you spikes. Not many people on the rock pile but I heard the crowds came just after we left, meet up groups, etc. I was worried about the stream crossing at the base of Jewel but it was a piece of cake. Tee shirt weather once below treeline. The wind was wicked above though.
Nice beer selection at the store by Faybans BTW. Ice cold too. Yum.
