Comments
Comments: Mt. Kinsman Trail below Bald Mtn. Spur was bare, with the exception of a few small patches of ice, easily avoided. On the way in, the mud was mostly frozen, but on the way out there was quite a bit of mud and standing water. Not boot-sucking, lose-a-pole type mud, but slick in a few places. A few tenths beyond the spur junction, the ice patches appeared and we put on light traction. The Hillsound version of microspikes worked well for the rest of the hike up and down, but some people might be more comfortable with more aggressive traction, either Hillsound Trail Pros or crampons. There was plenty of ice flows on the ascent to ridge, but it was soft enough for a good bite with traction and close to the ridge, there was snow cover over the ice and sections of packed snow. The Kinsman Ridge Trail over the ledges to North Kinsman and the rest of the way to South Kinsman was a mix of packed snow and ice but not a problem for ascent or descent with care. On our way back from South Kinsmans, the temperatures were warm enough to cause the snow to get just a little slick, and the ice softer on the way down. Despite all the ice, it was a quick trip out and back to the dirt.

Gorgeous day out for a quick and fun hike to the Kinsmans with GregYEAH!. Especially nice to meet Sunshine and her handsome hiking hound!
