Hannah and Chloe had a good day - they found ways around the tough ice sections, but have seen their fair share this winter and managed it well. Dogs without a lot of experience with ice would have a hard time in current conditions. |

Micros/Hillsounds from car to car today - small amount of ice at the start, increasing depths into the glade section - some ice bulges had about an inch of hard packed snow on top which gave better traction, others didn't and required some creative maneuvering to get around. We by-passed a few switchbacks by staying on the actually glade which had better snow and a bit less ice. More packed snow and better traction after the trail heads out of the glade just below the view point. Beyond the view point and out of the trees there was much less snow up to the summit, and what remained became mushy especially on the way down. Some of the ice in the woods had softened on the way down, but some places were still tedious. Sharp spikes or crampons would be ideal for this hike - a few in our group had slightly duller microspikes and managed, but a few sections were tricky - nowhere near enough snow for snowshoes anywhere. Great views, plenty of sun and not much wind all day - perfect for three SSW 48 finishes :) |
