Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Winter parking just off of Rt. 302 was hard ice in the morning; in the afternoon it was slushy/watery/icy.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: At this point, the old trail has been broken out, so there are two crossings. The first was open and able to be rock hopped. The second was a combination of ice bridge, logs and rocks; much easier to cross than it sounds.

Comments
Comments: The road walk up Sawyer River Rd. was easier in the morning than in the afternoon. Warm temperatures throughout the day softened all the snow that was packed by the snowmobiles into a soft, slippery surface. There's no good or right answer for traction on this stuff - bareboot worked, light traction had balling problems, and snowshoes seemed to work well, too. The Signal Ridge Trail was in good shape and easily hiked either bareboot or in light traction up until the steeper sections past the water crossings. As noted above, the official trail (the reroute) doesn't look to have been hiked on in a while. On the steep sections, everyone was in snowshoes for the televators and because the snow depth had increased a bit. Warm temperatures made the snow sticky, giving us a little extra workout uphill. Quite a few groups out today which helped to keep the trail nicely packed. Most people chose to bareboot on the way out, rather than fight the battle with the balling snow on the snowshoes.

Fun and rewarding day out in the sunshine with Schorman, LadyDi, Wild Bill, HikingGuy and Mark.
