Wildcat Ridge trail from D to A is now broken out (Craig and I wore snowshoes over and back on the ridge), but the snow didn't consolidate, so it was slippery and it slid off the ice on the steeps. The snowshoes didn't bite into the ice like crampons would have, which made going up the steeps a bit tedious (one step forward, half-step back). The trail up from Carter Notch is well beaten down too, as a large AMC group came up to A from the hut with spikes/crampons. After 46 peaks this winter (one more hike to go next week to finish the SSW48), this hike near the end of the season had the most snow to pack out for winter--and it wasn't really that much. |
