About an inch of fresh powder on a packed crust along Valley Way. Very easy going until the last mile or so above the tentsite. Snow was deeper here and snowshoes might be warranted. I didn't bring them, but another hiker had used some for this part as I saw on my descent. Fairly deep drifting on Star Lake Tr., but I didn't sink in more than a foot at the deepest. Harder packed snow as I climbed higher. I used the axe from Madison Hut to summit and back, and no equipment below the hut.
Winds were not 70-90mph with 110gusts like forecasted, but enough to knock me over if I wasn't paying attention. I followed Star Lake tr. until I couldn't really see it anymore, then I headed directly for Adams summit. Temps were around -5°, warming up to 5-10° later in the day in the valley. |
