Comments
Comments: Early start helped with the trail being firm. Hillsounds all the way until I reach the steeps on the backside of Cannon. Had to switch to 12 point step in crampons. At this point I was really happy that I`d decided to wear my Mountaineering boots to step into those crampons. If not I would have had to turn and head back towards Lonesome Lake. I got lucky and guessed right about ascending Fish and Jimmy and the backside of Cannon. So I was left with dealing with the steeps going down Hi Cannon Trail. No weather on me until I got to South Kinsman. It was in the form of snow and sleet. I didn`t really have a problem until I got to Kinsman Ridge Trail. It was still snowing but the air temperature was so warm that as soon as it hit the trees it melted. From that point on the trek was very demanding. The Cannon Balls were very difficult for me today. The very soft snow was balling up on my hillsounds which created a lot more weight on my legs. My pack was saturated which must have weighted at least 8 pounds more than usual. Going up the backside of Cannon is almost for crazy people considering that there was a 350ft ice flow straight up. I had to really concentrate on each and every step. All in all it was a tremendous challenge both mentally and physically for me. Special thank you for ChrisM and Kendra for all the communication on FB about the conditions of the trail. You were spot on and helped me tremendously.
