To start the hike input on microspikes, the road approach was all ice. Snow on the trail was soft and sticky so I constantly had to kick off the calling snow in the spikes. Trail conditions good though on the AT The accent up the willey summit trail was super steep, crampons would be highly advised, I kept pushing with microspikes and it was stupid of me. Would have been much safer to change into my crampons before the push up the stairs. They were huge ice chunks and it was much easier to go around them but still very difficult. One we summoned willey the trail was nice powdery snow I put crampons on up top but spikes would have been fine for the majority of the rest of the hike. Coming down my feild off the Avalon trail the snow was nice and soft with some ice spots. Much of the descent we butt sledded down and it was great. |
