| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Plenty of parking when I arrived at 7:45, the lot was almost full when I got back to my car at 11:45. |

| Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Drifts |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction, Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
The ice bridges are sketchy. On the way up I crossed 20-30 yards upstream relying on rocks. On the way down, since I didn't care if I dunked my foot, I crossed right at the trail. My foot stayed dry, but I could feel the ice bridge give a little under my weight. |

| Comments: |
The name of the game today was a solid base of hard-packed snow and ice covered by a very thin layer of packed powder, both the Greeley Ponds Trail and Mt Osceola Trails up until the steeps. The steep sections alternated between the above, and extensive ice bulges. Most of the icy sections could be bypassed in the trees at the side of the trail. The conditions on the slide were pretty good, more ice and packed powder, with extensive patches of unpacked snow. There was some drifting on the ridge (never more than 3-4 inches), and you guessed it hard-packed snow and ice covered by a thin layer of packed powder. The chimney bypass was easy enough with traction, but was tricky to descend, I didn't check out the bypass of the bypass. I counted 16 others on the trails today. I wore microspikes from the trailhead to the steeps, when I changed into full crampons, which I wore over both peaks and back down the steeps. I saw plenty of people in microspikes, so it's doable without crampons, but I'm really glad I had mine. |
