From the hut we headed up to Washington. Some in snowshoes, one in crampons. Both modes worked fine. At the summit the rest of us switched to crampons and stayed there the rest of the day. There was quite a bit of snow in the Jewell Trail up higher, but it had been broken out. Probably could have used snowshoes for a ways, but crampons were fine and it wasn't worth the trouble of changing over. Down lower, there was very little snow on top of ice that remains from last week. We opted to keep the crampons on for the better traction in the areas where the ice was covered by very little snow. With snow & rain in the immediate weather forecast, who knows what you will find in a couple days? |
