Started at Trailhead by Tramway parking lot, no one in lot at 7:45 am. One car in lot at 11:30 am. Trail was in good shape. Wore crampons for first mile or so and then switched to snow shoes for remainder of hike to summit. Snow was all well backed the entire trail so I probably didn't need the snow shoes. Snow was at least a foot deep along the top part of the trail. Met two other hikers. They were both wearing crampons but had brought snow shoes. Views were wide ranging and sky was completely clear. Cold and windy at observation tower but looking out at 360 degree scenery made up for the cold. Switched back from snow shoes to crampons about half way down. Micro spikes did not seem a safe choice for me today given amount of ice on lower portion of trail. Removed a four inch "duck under" that ran across the trail about 3/4 of a mile from trailhead. |
