Started breaking trail on Ferncroft heading up to Dicey. New loose powder had sheet of ice underneath. Switched from spikes to snowshoes just after the house and used rest of day. A few groups took BL. Tom Wiggin was steep but the fresh powder probably helped. Ledges were icy. Again no problem with snowshoes and the extra toe crampons Most everyone I saw had spikes and had tough times. Caught up with rest of the groups on the ledges and after Whiteface summit on Rollins. Took over breaking trail for a young lady who had been doing it from the start. Jct to Dicey's to summit was all broken out as a few groups were just doing Passaconaway. Some icy sections heading up the steeps to the summit. Again crampons/snowshoes make these sections manageable. Snow turned to mashed potatoes as the temps increased. But do to trail traffic, the descent down Dicey's was a breeze. |
