It was a bluebird day from Appalachia to Adams to the hut, with insignificant windchill up high. By the time we reached the summit of Madison the clouds had moved in and the wind increased, but not enough to require additional skin covering. Larry and I wore HH spikes from the car to both peaks and back to the hut, then switched to HH crampons for the Valley Way descent. The ice flows on Airline were impressive, and occurred in long stretches, but were readily walked up with the spikes, although I would have worn the crampons descending them. Valley Way was a combination of well packed snow and intermittent, shortish ice flows (but none as steep as on AL), both of which the crampons worked well for. The hike was fast, with all the ice cover, and packed snow, acting as (n)ice paving (as long as one had the appropriate traction). Quite a few people up in the northern presis today. |
