Comments
Comments: It was a beautiful, clear day, but very cold and windy. We left our snowshoes in the car and chose to use microspikes right from the start. Greeley Pond Trail was uneventful, and easy going. Once we got on Mount Osceola Trail and started up the steeps, it got very slippery with the snow-covered ice. We were wishing for crampons! The trail was partially packed down, and at times we were walking in snow rather than on it. The microspikes did the job, and we made it up the trail. Once on the ridge, the wind was howling so there were some significant snow drifts. Since we haven't had too much snow, we were able to walk through the snow and snowdrifts. Luckily we were behind someone and we were able to walk in his foot prints. The only time we wish we had our snowshoes was across the ridge, but again, microspikes did the job. We normally love going right up (and down) the chimney, but today we did not even bother to attempt it. We didn't even go right around it. We went way around it as there is a bypass to the bypass through the woods to the right (on the up). Thank goodness! There is some very, very thick ice on the chimney. There was some drifting from the chimney up to the summit of Mount Osceola. The return trip was easy, and we flew down! I'm sure the weekend hikers will pack the trail down nicely.
