Quick work day hike. Was going to head up with light traction only but just as I was about to start out the 2 hikers with the dog decided that they were going back to car for snowshoes. I followed suit and did not regret it. Good call. Used shoes car to car. 2-3" unpacked new snow to start with 4-6" higher up. Lots of drifting in the open and being first one up I believe I missed a turn in the last .2 miles before the Rim Tr. junction. It got me there but I think where it zigs and zags near top I didn't do a zag. Apologies to any following but with the winds today I imagine all tracks won't be there tomorrow. Snowshoes very helpful for last 1/2 mile. There were a few awkward steps with shoes on account of low snow depth but just enough snow cover so that ice was pretty much a non issue. KRT appeared well packed from Lonesome Lake side. Where sheltered the trail should be nicely packed as others were in shoes behind me. |
