Snowshoes car to car today - took a minute of searching to find the start of the herd path but no navigation issues after that. Visible trench once on the real trail, 1-2" fresh snow down low, increased to about 8" on the ridge with drifts 12+" - definitely bony down low but the snowshoes made navigation easier and switching to micros for the short rockier sections would have been tedious. Some rocks poking up higher up too but the track improved with increasing snow depths. The ridge would have been very difficult without snowshoes - even with our three tracks doing an out and back, it's not totally consolidated and some of our tracks were windblown on the way back. Had the trails to ourselves - followed a set of tracks that went to Flume then turned around and continued north towards Little Haystack but never saw their owner. Cold and windy all day, sun kept trying to peek through but no views today. Definitely a true winter feel today - thanks Tim, Ali and Hannah for a great hike. |
