Comments
Comments: I stayed in North Conway for the weekend and took advantage of being close to the mountains by climbing Mount Chocorua for sunrise. I did the entire hike with microspikes but had my showshoes in my pack. Crampons would have probably been the ideal traction as there were several inches of packed granular snow with blue ice underneath in some areas (particularly on Champney Falls Trail between the two end of Loop Trail and above the Falls on Loop Trail). The summit was a mix of knee-deep drifts and wind-packed snow. I felt comfortable on the frost-laden rocks with just microspikes but some would probably consider carrying an ice axe. I had the summit to myself and sunrise was amazing. Clouds were sitting on Franconia Ridge and Pemi Wilderness, but the Sandwich, Presidential and Carter/Moriah ranges were in the clear. As always I will be writing a full trip report on my blog.
