Peaks Cannon Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Hi-Cannon Trail, Kinsman Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, January 17, 2016
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We parked in the lot right at Lafayette Campground. There were a lot of cars in the lot, but plenty of parking was available. It's a free for all in the winter and there were many more cars in the lot than could ever fit in that area in the summer.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The only crossing on Hi-Cannon was fine. The water was running, but one could easily avoid it by stepping on a rock in the middle of the stream. The depth of the water is minimal so you could walk right across the crossing with no issues.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail is in great condition right now. If I'm remembering correctly, there are a couple of blow downs on Hi-Cannon, but nothing you can't step right over.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: We saw lots of dogs today and a couple of 4-6 month old puppies. Hi-Cannon might be difficult with a pup as there are some ladders and they are slick with ice.

Comments
Comments: What a beautiful day! It was chilly, but the sun was out , the sky was blue, and it was just gorgeous. There are some pretty spectacular views of Franconia Ridge from Hi-Cannon Trail, and we could easily see Lonesome Lake from a couple of spots, too. This trail is really pretty in the winter. We started right away with microspikes, but the trail was so packed that we probably could have bare-booted for awhile. There's quite a bit of ice underneath the snow as you get higher up Hi-Cannon, so traction is necessary. There were even a couple of places we were wishing for crampons because the ice is soooooo thick and slick, but the microspikes turned out to be just fine with a little bit of care in foot placement. The ladders were icy, but we got up (and down) with no problem. The wind was whipping up top on the observation deck, and it was so cold my iphone/camera quit working. Thankfullly we got a couple of picks before the phone shut down. We didn't stick around too long as the wind was quite uncomfortable. Going back down was FUN!!!
